True but he never arrested Tash even after he found out the truth. Again for Julia's sake. He let Ava Moon go too. So he was never completely rigid when it came to upholding the law. The obstacle? Maybe he was a bit mad at her still for not telling him the truth about the death threats earlier than she did? It could explain why he seemed to be oblivious to her attempts at bringing up the proposal subject last episode. Tash was also a potential rival: William is not always so self-aware of his personal motives. Regarding the people he let go - I think William was conflicted about both. He lost Julia over the Tash issue, and he punished himself by trying to quit his job as detective after he let Ava Moon go. I don't think he's going to beat himself up over Caroline. I can see how Julia's reaction to his proposal would make William hesitate to propose again (I thought she'd have to push him into trying again, too). But that's not the same thing as choosing between propriety and love. William was asking Caroline about making that choice, and he seemed to decide something as a result. There are possible propriety issues for him - money, class, religion, etc. But these have not been presented as an obstacle to marriage: William and Julia had been talking marriage for two seasons already.

But that's another thing, where did she get her lab stuff from? Did William bring it with him? Yeah, probably it won't be as bad as she thought and they'll have a dozen babies after they adopt their first kid! Then again, she was married to Darcy for awhile and didn't conceive...presumably prophylactics weren't used. Julia's father was a doctor, so he might have had lab stuff on hand. As for the previous marriage...perhaps Darcy was just the wrong man for the job. Artificial insemination in 1884(!) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_insemination#HistoryThe hysteria theory probably led to a lot of examination of the uterus and the female reproductive system in general. Maybe there were some other discoveries along the way that would address the source of Julia' infertility. Or she could seek a patented Electricity Cure! I can see William getting very curious about what Julia's so secretly up to while she runs around trying various new treatments.

I also thought William was searching her house, which I thought odd and not like him at the time, but I put it down to the fact that it was Julia that needed him to do it. But when she asks if she can keep the photograph it also gave me pause, you clearly see him finding it in the same drawer he finds the syringe... which would make it really strange for her to ask if she could keep a photograph that was already hers. Responding to you petruck and CosmicCalvacade and snacky re: the searching of the drawers ... I watched that episode again late last night and it is really difficult to tell exactly where the searches take place. I wonder if "editing" causes these gaps sometimes? When Julia found the unused heart medicine in a drawer in her father's house, she was in a different room than when William was looking through a drawer. But in itself that all means nothing because there was more than one room in either of the houses. Now, when William found the book with the letters and the picture, this time I noticed one of the opened envelopes was addressed to Caroline so that would indicate he was searching a drawer in Caroline's house. When Wm is talking to Caroline later, we don't hear the whole conversation but Caroline seems to know that William is questioning her as a Detective in an investigation and they had been discussing the injection. When he asked her if she could do it again would she, she responded in reference to the injection so that makes me thing that is what was being discussed. When he showed her the picture she wasn't upset or surprised so he likely told her he would search the premises as part of the investigation....we just weren't there for that conversation. When he shows her the photo he found, I believe now that she asks if she can keep it as she thought William would keep it to include with evidence found in the search. it's at that point that William let's her know the case is closed and she can keep the picture. Man, watching a TV show shouldn't be so complicated!! haha

On the other hand, it's occurred to me that one way to get Julia back into forensic medicine is to set up her own consulting practice and contract with the Pinkertons. I doubt it. I'm pretty sure they are gearing up for her to become a full time paid 'profiler' with the constabulary. She basically already helps Murdoch do this as it is so it wouldn't change much. And it would allow them to work together more closely like they used to in the morgue without her randomly popping in all the time which I always found annoying. I would love that, Julia full time at the stationhouse but with her own job to do that meshes with William's work regularly---like when she was in the morgue.

Maybe MM should look into his non-Sherlock Holmes stuff to find out what else was in the air at the time.

Very good point about the editing. Also, from inside the production, where everyone has a script and knows what's going on, it's probably hard to tell what will baffle the audience.

Otherwise she would have to wait on William to call her - which he would only do if he felt she was really necessary. That would leave them on an unequal footing and just be really annoying.

The insemination thing I mean. Men are idiots.

Well I'm not a mysteries show buff at all so it doesn't take much to baffle me! I enjoy the mystery aspects now but I miss details until the 3rd of 4th viewing usually!! (I watched MM for the first time, by accident last summer and it was Brackenreid and the hint of something going on - or not - between Wm & Julia that hooked me, then.)

I started watching mid second season. It's pretty unusual for me to get into something solely for the love affair but in this case it was just irresistible. Of course I eventually came to love virtually everything about it as well. I can't say that is the case for very many other shows. The fact that it is just so purely Canadian doesn't hurt matters either.

I started watching a little earlier in S2 when I stumbled on the show while flicking channels. I liked W/J's chemistry and the shows premiss so I kept watching. 5 years later and I'm still watching. I'm English so these days I have to wait till the next day to find a torrent to watch I can't wait for Alibi to show it at our pace.

Yeah I was flicking channels too and I came across a scene with them in it and was instantly hooked by their chemistry. It was probably just a work scene too. Sadly I can't remember anymore. It took me quite awhile to not find Murdoch on his own to be a "bland sort of chap," like H.G. Wells says to Julia. Actually now that I think about it, that had a lot to do with why I didn't get into it earlier. It always seemed to be a boring interrogation scene every time I turned to it. Lol, it seems like our positions switched after CBC took over.
