That's almost exactly what it was like for me. I started watching a little earlier in S2 when I stumbled on the show while flicking channels. I liked W/J's chemistry and the shows premiss so I kept watching. 5 years later and I'm still watching. I'm English so these days I have to wait till the next day to find a torrent to watch I can't wait for Alibi to show it at our pace. Yeah I was flicking channels too and I came across a scene with them in it and was instantly hooked by their chemistry. It was probably just a work scene too. Sadly I can't remember anymore. It took me quite awhile to not find Murdoch on his own to be a "bland sort of chap," like H.G. Wells says to Julia. Actually now that I think about it, that had a lot to do with why I didn't get into it earlier. It always seemed to be a boring interrogation scene every time I turned to it. Lol, it seems like our positions switched after CBC took over. The show just kind of passed me by until I stumbled onto it. I'd vaguely seen TV spots for the original Peter Outerbridge version and it hadn't really appealed. So I guess I just blocked out any mention I saw of the Yannick version. I can't remember the first scene or first episode I saw. I just know it was earlier in S2. I liked/loved Murdoch straight away. I also loved Julia and George. It took me a few episodes to warm up to Brackenreid. But then I was attached to all four of the characters. I was a fan of W/J from my first viewing. I was hooked by their chemistry. I saw S1 online a little while later. I used to enjoy watching MM on Alibi. But I'm too impatient to wait for it to be aired these days because Canada are weeks ahead. I'd end up being spoiled too much.

I started watching mid second season. It's pretty unusual for me to get into something solely for the love affair but in this case it was just irresistible. Of course I eventually came to love virtually everything about it as well. I can't say that is the case for very many other shows. The fact that it is just so purely Canadian doesn't hurt matters either. The first ones I saw were from either Season 2 or Season 3 - "The Artful Detective" on Ovation while house-sitting for someone with the means to subscribe to premium cable. I think Ovation was actually running Season 2 and Season 3 at the same time (a couple of episodes a day) with a Season 5 ep (portrayed as "new") on Fridays. The first episode I saw might have been Rich Boy, Poor Boy; Snakes and Ladders; or Dinosaur Fever. I can't remember what caught my eye - the 19th century isn't my usual thing for period drama, and as an American I would have assumed the genre was a "Western". The shippy aspect wasn't the first thing I caught, though. I remember originally thinking that William was a consulting American detective. When I realized it was set in Canada, I began thinking of it as something to recommend to/share with my Mom. I remember being intrigued by the term "finger marks" - I guess the idea of historical forensics combined with strong plotting of individual episodes was enough to make me do further research. I think I caught on to Jilliam by checking out youtube vids. Then I watched the episodes that those vids pertained to (mostly seasons 2-4). After that, I started watching from Season 1, in order. If producers are listening, I hope they caught the "discovery" argument for supporting fan vids and fanfic in there. My two favorite vids are by qumquat: they inspired me to watch the show further, and they are what I share with other people when I'm trying to persuade them to give MM a try. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSstG0lORNI (this one is epic and should be an official commercial). www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3Y8BNIp3Hc (for shippers) That qumquat has great taste in music suitable for fan vids. Anyone know if he/she/it has a web site? There are not nearly enough quality MM vids, and some of them, strangely, can only be viewed in Canada.

I had a thought concerning the proposal.
When William was saying he wanted a lifetime of happiness, it seemed almost as if he were begging Julia for something. Yet he seemed a bit surprised and off-balance when Julia prompted him to ask again.
Perhaps the reason he didn't try to propose again, despite all of Julia's hints, was that he was still waiting for her to respond to the first attempt. He probably had the whole scenario laid out in his mind beforehand, and when Julia threw a wrench in it, the film of his imagination got stuck. He needed Julia to say yes to the proposal he had already made.
That still doesn't explain whatever he was weighing in his mind when he asked Caroline about her choice, though. That seemed more of a question he would have been asking in Season 4.

Oh dear. You should have left out that last comment about the fan videos. CosmicCavalcade is never going to shut up about her excellent taste in music, epic videos, and inspirational skills. I'm steeling myself for endless (Godlike) bragging. The forum deity is qumquat? Wow, she has some serious talent! I've mentioned liking that Canada vid in other posts around here, and I've shared it a lot as a quick summary of MM. It might show up in some reviews I wrote - hope that causes no issues. >.> *later after checking for new videos* The cartoon character icon should have been a clue! D:

Clearly I am over flowing with serious talent with vids like this: And it's funny that this came up now cuz I just posted a new vid today! I've had the song picked out forever but could never make it until certain events happened. And if you want to make your own awesome MM cartoon character icon thing, just go to the south park builder and go nuts! I can never seem to get his hair the right colour though. :/

I'm truly full of admiration for your vids and am prepared to worship you for your Divine Qualities. But I'm also now all the more bummed that you've been disappointed in MM since Season 5 and prepared to let it go after the wedding is a done deal. T_T Ps. That George video is probably part of the reason I have trouble getting onboard with George/Emily shipping: George is just too much of a goof. On the other hand, your William-Decks-Darcy-in-Slowmo is pure gold. Ps. Why are some of your videos only viewable in Canada?

T_T I would be willing to let it go next season but only if they got married before/by the half way point. I want to see them in married life with an adopted kid in the Badlands before this ends. That would be my ideal scene to end the series on. All his dreams have finally come true sort of thing. I guess it's just that I don't find the mystery aspect to be that great anymore and if there's nothing to really work out 80% of the time, I get bored and find little enjoyment in rewatching. That's something I don't have an issue with for 95% of the episodes from S1-4 even though I've seen them way more times than S5 and on. It always makes me laugh though. Apparently a lot of people didn't find it funny though. They must like Gemily or something. Content ID or something along those lines. Video matchup gets it blocked in the states and music content gets it blocked in Germany. Sometimes it's both. I don't have any control over it. I'm just glad they didn't all get blocked worldwide like a few of them did. I know there are proxies one can get. I don't know if they apply to YT though.

Yes, when they do end the show they need to round off William's journey. I'd love to see W/J with an adopted child.
I still enjoy most of the crime storylines but some are quite obvious. Though I've never found MM the biggest puzzle in a lot of cases. The characters still manage to sell the plots to me anyway. I just love the feel of the show.

Maybe it's the kid in me, but I love the "William and the Dinosaurs" arc. I read a couple of books on the Bone Wars after seeing Dinosaur Fever. The tycoon Carnegie was involved in funding dinosaur collections (to offset the bad rep he got for violent strike-breaking) - that might be an opportunity to for Carnegie to make another appearance. I know how it could go down! Perhaps William could take a job as security for a high risk excavation! I must say NO to the mustache though. The mystery quality still seems good to me. Maybe you're just exhausted from being a fan for so many years? I'm just at the discovery stage, so I hope the rug isn't pulled out from under me too soon.

Though I've never found MM the biggest puzzle in a lot of cases. The characters still manage to sell the plots to me anyway. I just love the feel of the show. It's an age of scientific wonder, brimming with new things. Somewhere in there could be a path to a natural child. Even if they adopt first, I'd like to see Julia trying it. Television shows always have a recycled feel for me, so I don't expect constant originality. MM delievers high production quality most of the time, which works for me. Some episodes are better than others - even in the early seasons. There are episodes I've watch half a dozen times, and episodes where one viewing was enough. I don't get the feeling MM is dying any time soon, though. Sometimes writers get bored and they project that on to the idea that there are no more stories for the show. But if that were true, there would be no more TV shows: there are always stories to be told (or retold). MM has the added bonus of a historical scaffolding to nail even the most over-used plot onto. As long as the actors continue to bring good performances, MM can get by on style alone.

CosmicCavalcade, you have relieved me of the need to keep all 18 hours of S7 saved on my PVR for the next year or so when the powers that be finally release it on DVD! Thank you, thank you, you are amazing!!
I really enjoyed the finale. I was so caught up in the trailer and then...the moment, that I missed how close the location was to my cottage. Ive been looking at that island for 30+ years!!!! Its funny how I often wonder where they shoot some of the scenes, but when I KNOW the general locale, I really need to figure out exactly where it is. I agree that Brackenreids assault leaves a huge, if temporary, opening for Wm to become an acting inspector, George an acting detective and Henry to have a larger role. I do not believe he is dead. MM is still a joint production between Alibi and CBC so the odds of losing the most significant UK connection is quite low. Cutbacks at CBC made the front page of the paper today. MM is still a go but no word on number of episodes.
Love the speculation about Julia becoming an active consultant, the Pinkertons and Butch Cassidy and Sundance. I quite like the idea of Sam Carr, Jimmy and even Tess returning as Pinkertons or being hired by the constabulary under Williams guidance. (Sorry about my lack of apostrophes and question marks...my keyboard switched to French symbols and I cant switch it off, lol).
It is intriguing to think about the possibility that Julias progressive causes may jeopardize William taking over as inspector, or at the very least, cause him some grief. I got thinking about Carolines belief that Lionel wanted Julia to be the one to end his life. Would she have done it, knowing she would have to hide the truth from William forever. William has clearly matured and softened his rigid beliefs. (His treatment of Caroline Hill and Ava Moon are excellent examples). He got past Julias abortion but could he forgive or ignore her active participation in euthenasia.

Tesssssssssssssss....I still think she's the one for George. But that leaves Emily without a date. Hmmm... Watched some eps of Nothing Too Good For a Cowboy, which made me feel better about shows where the main couple is married. Apparently there needs to be some third party making trouble, though... It hadn't occurred to me that Julia would have to keep assisting with euthanasia a secret for William. I believe you're right about that, though. It makes me curious about what William's moral limit would be. I doubt he could see Julia as a murderer, but he might be convinced that she's going to hell, and let Julia know that in little ways. That also puts another light on the suffragette hunger strikes: if those are suicide, that would put her soul at risk for eternal damnation, too. William's career opportunities are so precarious that I don't think there's any way that Julia's "scandalous" activities won't hurt him. However, I think that arc would look something like Brackenreid's thrwarted political career: perhaps William decides he's not going to be the one to break through the Catholic glass ceiling. He will just have to make his own success, outside the hierarchies and gatekeepers of an "official" career. Maybe Edison will hire him as a consultant~

The push and pull of Julias progressive activities vs the political constraints of Williams career advancement would unfortunately read much like the Garland marriage. The writers could play it for an episode or two until Brackenreid is back on his feet. Regardless, one of the things I like best about MM is the way sensitive issues are raised and resolved between Wm and Julia. Their relationship embodies the differences of class, upbringing and religion. These were all issues that permeated all of (Canadian) society at the time.
My vote is that the marriage will not happen until Brackenreid is well enough to walk Julia down the aisle. Her father is dead so he would be her first choice. I am rooting for the 100th episode!
