To me that's all the difference between dramatic writing (presenting a creative scene) and fan service (reproducing some fanfic cliche so shippers can sigh "ooooh, the writers hear us, they really do hear us..."

But in the end, lying about the coffee showed that William was trying to spend time with and impress Julia: shipping mission accomplished.

What episode was that, I'll have to check it out because Fanny around doesn't make sense but fannin' does. Perhaps William misheard. Fanning around is basically messing about.
