I really liked S1, esp episodes 1 and 13. They are some of my favorite of the whole show. I wasn't as keen on the Spiritualism stuff although I did like them exploring William's grief over Liza. And Spiritualism was a big fad in that era so it made sense to have some plots revolve around it. On a more insignificant note, Julia's hair looked too tightly pulled back from her head and you can see some sun spots on her face. Maybe they are very large freckles. Her skin tone is more like what a white woman would have had then though. Later she looks far too tan for the Victorian era.

I agree with u Hannikan. William always looked the same, obviously a bit older in season 5 but Julia changed a lot. I perceived her more like a girl in season 1 and all of of sudden in season 2 I saw her more like a woman. It's probably due to her skin complexion, the lack of make up and her hair in season 1. I much prefer her to see her as a woman like she was in from season 2 to season 4. I must say that in season 5, she looks too old though. I think it's all about the hair for her character. I think she should tone down the blond and go back to a bit more brown. She looked younger and suited more William 's look too. They (her and William )looked better together when she had a brown tint in her hair. Anyway, I hope than in season 6, they won't make her look like 10 years older than William.

LOL I don't think she looks 10 yrs older than him. He's definitely aged but he's still handsome. He looks around 40 now, maybe very late 30's. She never looked like a girl to me. I could always tell she was in her 30's. You could see her freckles more in S1 though. My only criticism of her look is that she has been way too tan since she went blond in S2. Tan skin was very frowned upon in this era and women covered themselves from the sun with hats. Julia is unconventional so I suppose that could explain it but she also doesn't spend much time outside. It would have mostly been women who worked outside and couldn't help but get tan who were.

I didn't really like her freckles in season 1 but may be its because the actress is probably naturally ginger!!! I don't know. Is Helen Joy ginger or not? but I really like her brown hair with blond highlights in season 2 to 4. William has aged a bit too and I agree still good looking and so is Julia but it looks like they want her to look much older all off a sudden because she is married!! I don't really get it to b honest. I just hope they put her hair back slightly brown again. I think blond hair makes people look older. I know coz I tried on myself and my kids told me I look so much younger with plum hair. lol and I believe them I suppose!!!!! I can see the difference on Julia though big time. OK , Hannikan, she only looked slightly older than William like let's say 3 or 4 years older but it is still a shame. I would like them to look the same age specially when they kiss next.

She's not a natural ginger, no, or she wouldn't be able to tan. It doesn't look like a fake tan. Blonds can freckle and tan, redheads only freckle. Being a ginger myself, I speak from experience. She's an ash blond (dark blond/light brunette) naturally, I believe. Like it was in S2-4. Most people think blond hair makes you look younger whereas brunette hair (esp dark) makes you look older. I actually think her very pale blond hair has made her look younger in S5.

sorry this is a totally useless comment but i just wanna say that i find it hilarious that the official S1 discussion is centered around Julia's hair colour and skin tone! xD

Like I said it was an insignificant note but I guess it took off. Yeah, I'm surprised no one had commented before on S1. My favorite ep from S1 was That Annoying Red Planet. It's really funny, has some nice W/J moments, and it introduces Terence Meyers who I can't help but like somehow. He was creepy at first though. George is totally hilarious in it.

totally agree! i guess that's why i enjoyed doing my recap for it so much. Though i kinda, just slightly ruined the W/J moments in it. ;D however, i don't feel too bad. afterall, i made up for it in later installations.

I just purchased the Box set of the first four seasons and I was very disappointed with how loud the background music in the episodes were it totally ruined the whole thing for me as I couldn't make out what the Actors were sayingabove the music. Thankfully they addressed this problem in season two. Did anyone else find the same thing?

I've just finished re-watching season 1 in the alternative (European DVD) order, which is probably the original, logical order . What a difference it makes to the character development and storyline. We're introduced to the characters, see how William's mind works in the first ep. 'Meet' Liza and get her memory out of the way in order for the relationship with Julia to commence in the second ep. Then meet William's father to see what forces shaped him in the third ep. The rest of the eps are in a different order too which shows the development of Jilliam in a progressive way instead of good friends one week and colleagues the next. I know why they showed Power first but it really doesn't work for the storyline.

(I watch them on Acorn). But yeah, the first eps of MM I ever saw were a few season 3 episodes, so when I went back to start watching them from season 1, it always bothered me how they were picnicing together (definitely a form of courting IMO) to being just colleagues after that. That makes more sense that the episodes are out of order however. Any idea why they did that? This is the first I've heard of this.

I believe it's only the region 2 (Europe) DVD that has them in this order, everywhere else has the North American order. I assume they thought Power would be a better introduction to the show, it was definitely more polished than the earlier ones. Don't know why the rest of them are out of order. Attached is a list of the order, NA episode number and which disc each ep is on. Alternate Season 1 order.pdf (95.84 KB)

Also curious if it makes Yannick's "Asperger's" performance look less patchy. We never did see that silver horse again.
