The hat just enhances his survival chances, as it encases him in a semi-permeable membrane. Is that how it works? I never got into Harry Potter or any other fantasy - I've been approaching this from the Surrealist/Jungian angle. It's good to know the technical details of how Homburg Magic actually works!

so then how did he survive the poison I have to check the ep for the exact disposition of the hat - if it was knocked off, William had no MAGIC protection. But that doesn't mean everything will kill him when the hat is off. Then he is a mere mortal who may or may not recover from poison. He wasn't actually being poisoned, just drugged.

Since YB was twit-trolling with #holdontoyourhat for the season finale, I predict the preview for said ep will end with:
"Julia...where is my hat?!"
Ominous mood established.

He wasn't actually being poisoned, just drugged. Ah, then I think the Magic Homburg might regard this situation as beneath its notice. It has better things to do. See The Adjustment Bureau for a better understanding of the function of such liminal hats in the cosmos.

He wasn't actually being poisoned, just drugged. But the mouse died. Too bad the moused didn't have a little mouse-sized magic homburg!

He wasn't actually being poisoned, just drugged. But the mouse died. The mouse is much smaller than William and would succumb much more readily to any drug.
