So.... I would like to start by saying "welcome back, everyone." Also, I am exceedingly proud of myself for remaining spoiler free-I resisted the urge to spoil myself during my lunch break (which is right after the show finishes) like I usually do. Here are my thoughts from a single viewing! Loved all of the Jilliam both personally and professionally, and also loved the cuts-nice editing. I also had #teagownlove as well and also loved her hair fully down. But my single favorite moment (if I had to pick one) is when Giles created a distraction by starting a rumor that one prisoner was calling the mother of another a prostitute! Hah-so unlike Giles' former self, yet how he phrased it is so Giles. Loved it. I don't think the door has been closed on Gedna just yet-just a hunch from little things I've seen or heard. Nothing I can swear to however... No, it wasn't the epic cinematic opening of past few seasons, but I actually like it for that-it's more true to what the show is. Also noted was that there was more Jilliam in this single episode than there was in all of season 8. Okay, first dinner and then more viewings. But in a nutshell, I really enjoyed this ep and I'm looking forward to this season! I'm glad it wasn't the big cinematic opening as it wouldn't have fitted the tone of the story. I too loved all the Jilliam moments. The personal moments were sweet - with more kisses in this one ep than all of S8 - and professionally as the nerds. Have to admit my favourite character in the ep was Giles. Nigel Bennett played him with just the right amount of pathos. He was perfect. I've been an admirer of NB since Forever Knight, this ep confirms why. When I saw who the writers were I figured we were in for a great ep, two of my favourites! Yes evilpete, you're one of my favourite MM writers!!

I agree regarding nice Jilliam - now that looked like a husband and wife teasing and doing stuff together! Regarding George's dilemma - perhaps he invents sexting?

Good episode, but poor George and Edna. I guess we probably won't see her again. George must spend S9 single. Or... Edna's departure could be good old fashioned writer's delay to prevent the couple from getting together too soon and to maximize the ship.

But anyway. Giles my precious human being come get a hug. You too George. EVERYBODY GETS A HUG! I wanted to hug Giles, too! Such a softy under that prickly pear! I hope we see more of him.

It's a massive block they've put in front of George and Edna. While I prefer 1.01 and 7.01, I think overall Nolo Contendere ranks higher than most other season openers we've had. I wouldn't put it amongst the top MM episodes in general, but that's alright. All I was hoping for was it to be better than a lot of S8, and it was. It was more like how we prefer MM to be. A good start to S9.

Or Simon gets on a boat for Australia to stay with relatives/work there.

By the way, I noticed that George actually pleaded "nolo contendere" when lizmc said this isn't a part of the Canadian legal system.

Pretty good episode. Not much to say. The Simon factor makes it interesting.

I loved everything about this episode. Giles was the best. I actually like him better as a fallen angel then when he was chief constable. The scarf is puzzling but not enough to ruin the epi for me. My favorite part was Julia and the uncut diamond. She looked emotional that it was leaving. Maybe it was my imagination but she seemed to be attached to the stone. I also like her sewing William up and saying serves you right. This bodes very well for another great season. Keep posting I so enjoy everyone's take on things.

By the way, I noticed that George actually pleaded "nolo contendere" when lizmc said this isn't a part of the Canadian legal system. I put that down to artistic license. You can actually refuse to enter a plea, which in reality is nolo contendere. Under British law, on which Canadian law is based, there has to be a plea entered hence they automatically enter not guilty.

I got the impression Julia was rather covetous of the diamond and would have preferred they hadn't found the rightful owner.

The scene I found the most moving was after George shook Giles' hand. As he was heading towards the gate, the camera lingered on Giles and he had such a look of sorrow and resignation. I really felt sorry for him at that point.....
