So the real mystery was - how did Crabtree keep his sideburns so sharp and nicely trimmed in prison ? I quite enjoyed the episode but was sorry it turned out to be Simon. When George finds the scarf, I loved the play of emotions on his face before he explained his realization to Murdoch. It was either 'I can say nothing to Murdoch when in trouble but I could never lie to him about this outright' or 'I am so shocked I can't hide my thoughts so have to speak up'. Or something like that. I was really hoping we'd have a wedding for George this season though. I agree with everyone that the Jilliam scenes were lovely. Seems so much more in character than the season 8 post marriage relationship! Kudos to evilpete!

I finally got to watch and of course loved it I'm bummed for George, but I figured something of the sort would happen. Hopefully Edna comes back as I really don't want them to start George on another relationship. My favorite bit had to be when Julia told William "That's what you get for skulking in an alley by yourself." lol

The scene I found the most moving was after George shook Giles' hand. As he was heading towards the gate, the camera lingered on Giles and he had such a look of sorrow and resignation. I really felt sorry for him at that point..... I loved that scene!!

I loved everything about this episode. Giles was the best. I actually like him better as a fallen angel then when he was chief constable. The scarf is puzzling but not enough to ruin the epi for me. My favorite part was Julia and the uncut diamond. She looked emotional that it was leaving. Maybe it was my imagination but she seemed to be attached to the stone. I also like her sewing William up and saying serves you right. This bodes very well for another great season. Keep posting I so enjoy everyone's take on things. I got the impression Julia was rather covetous of the diamond and would have preferred they hadn't found the rightful owner. s Me too. every time I watch it is more apparent. LOL

I have watched the show several times now and I am struck at what a fine actor the young man who plays Simon is... Every emotion that plays in his face has several layers. At first we think he is a sullen angry young man who has lost both his family to be and the family that was. Once we know the story you see layers of emotion in his scenes. What a talented fellow. I hope we see more of both he and Edna as the season progresses. I was a fan of Gemily but now I have grown very fond of Edna and after all she was love interest years before Emily.

I really felt sorry for him at that point..... I loved that scene!! I did too. When he says "thought stunting bat blind stupidity" he is talking about his disdain for the fellow inmates. However in that last scene you know he meant himself too. After all he was disappointed in himself for falling for that wastrel that tricked him...

So.... I would like to start by saying "welcome back, everyone." Also, I am exceedingly proud of myself for remaining spoiler free-I resisted the urge to spoil myself during my lunch break (which is right after the show finishes) like I usually do. Here are my thoughts from a single viewing! Loved all of the Jilliam both personally and professionally, and also loved the cuts-nice editing. I also had #teagownlove as well and also loved her hair fully down. But my single favorite moment (if I had to pick one) is when Giles created a distraction by starting a rumor that one prisoner was calling the mother of another a prostitute! Hah-so unlike Giles' former self, yet how he phrased it is so Giles. Loved it. I don't think the door has been closed on Gedna just yet-just a hunch from little things I've seen or heard. Nothing I can swear to however... No, it wasn't the epic cinematic opening of past few seasons, but I actually like it for that-it's more true to what the show is. Also noted was that there was more Jilliam in this single episode than there was in all of season 8. Okay, first dinner and then more viewings. But in a nutshell, I really enjoyed this ep and I'm looking forward to this season! I'm glad it wasn't the big cinematic opening as it wouldn't have fitted the tone of the story. I too loved all the Jilliam moments. The personal moments were sweet - with more kisses in this one ep than all of S8 - and professionally as the nerds. Have to admit my favourite character in the ep was Giles. Nigel Bennett played him with just the right amount of pathos. He was perfect. I've been an admirer of NB since Forever Knight, this ep confirms why. When I saw who the writers were I figured we were in for a great ep, two of my favourites! Yes evilpete, you're one of my favourite MM writers!! The prisoner who got so angry about his mother being insulted is the same man who took the money to murder for her. I think it is a little strange they let her go. Wouldn't the mother be an accomplice to murder? It reminds me of many early criminal stereotypes in TV and movies where the criminals are murderous theives but go all soft over mom.

I think Giles saw a little of the man he wanted to be in George, and it heartened him to see truth and justice exhonerate him.

Brackenreid says that the owner of the diamond paid for it in blood. I took that to mean that he was dead. Therefore the diamond had no owner?

I've only seen it twice and it wasn't a big cinematic style opener this season, however as lizmc said interesting twists and turns and already more kisses that all of last season! Loved the scenes with Giles. I hope we get to see him again, he's mellowed, guess that's what jail does to you. I loved Giles, too! One thing isn't settling right with me. If George went through all the trouble to take the blame for Edna and Simon in the first place, why did he identify the scarf as Simon's? Even if he recognized it, wouldn't he have continued to hide that knowledge to protect Simon? I think he was truly shocked that it was Simon. After all he had made up his mind it was Edna having found her with the gun. In the end he almost seems upset with himself for not having thought of Simon.

Despite being a softy for Mom, I was surprised by Pearson's direct confession. Couldn't he hang for murdering another prisoner?

Brackenreid says that the owner of the diamond paid for it in blood. I took that to mean that he was dead. Therefore the diamond had no owner? I took that to refer to Blood Diamonds. Perhaps setting us up for an episode paralleling the movie.

Despite being a softy for Mom, I was surprised by Pearson's direct confession. Couldn't he hang for murdering another prisoner? It kind of sounds like he is set for hanging already. He said he could not spend where he is going. Perhaps a reference to can't take it with you?

Pretty good episode. Not much to say. The Simon factor makes it interesting. Too much marriage for you?

Everything I might want to have said has been said. Nothing else for me to meaningfully contribute.
